A Natural Approach to Sinusitis

Sinusitis is an inflammation of the mucous membranes that line the sinus cavities in the nose. Symptoms include a blocked nose, cough, pain and nasal discharge. In acute cases individuals may suffer from a headache or pain in the cheekbones. 

A diet consisting mainly of refined carbohydrates, dairy and insufficient raw green vegetables can increase the possibility for sinus congestion. Sinusitis may also occur as a complication of an upper respiratory tract infection like a cold or flu, or when the linings of the sinus cavity are irritated by prolonged allergies, airborne pollutants, swimming in polluted water, polyps in the nasal cavities, overuse of nasal sprays or antihistamines, or the spread of an infection from an abscess in the upper tooth.  

Aromatherapy

• A steam inhalation with Eucalyptus or Pine essential oils can help to clear the sinuses. 

Herbal Remedies for Sinusitis
• Yarrow tea (Achillea Millefolium) is beneficial for treating the symptoms. 
• Golden seal (Hydrastis Canadensis) acts on the mucous membranes, making it an excellent remedy for sinusitis and catarrh. 
• To clear mucous and post nasal drip, pour 1 cup of boiling water over ½ teaspoon each of ginger powder, clove powder and cinnamon powder and strain. Sweeten with 1 teaspoon of honey and drink.
Complimentary and Lifestyle Treatments

• Consider your current thought patterns. Is there someone close to you that is irritating you, or are you unable to let go of emotional heartache or loss. 
• A facial massage can offer relief from pain and inflammation. 
• Bathe your sinuses with a solution made up of 1 teaspoon of table salt, 2 cups of warm water and a pinch of bicarbonate of soda. Pour into a shot glass, tilt your head back, close one nostril with your thumb and sniff the mixture through the open nostril. Blow your nose gently and repeat on the other side. 
• Acupuncture and Cranio-sacral therapy are complementary therapies that have been successful in relieving nasal congestion and pain. 
• Make a compress with a hand towel that is moistened with hot water and place over your face. The heat "opens up" sinuses and eases pressure.


Nutritional Guidance 

• Spicy foods including horseradish and cayenne pepper as well as raw radishes can help to clear the sinuses.  
• Add watercress to your salad to treat respiratory ailments. 
• Dietary supplements that act as immune boosters can be taken on a daily basis. These include Echinacea and an antioxidant complex that contains Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Beta-carotene, Selenium and more.
